7: Binge Watching

In today's digital age, the way we consume entertainment has undergone a profound transformation. With the advent of streaming platforms like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime Video, binge-watching has emerged as a prevalent cultural phenomenon among people of all ages. Binge-watching refers to the practice of watching multiple episodes of a television series or several movies in rapid succession, often for hours on end. 

One of the primary reasons behind the popularity of binge-watching is the convenience and accessibility offered by streaming services. Unlike traditional television broadcasting, where viewers had to wait for a specific time slot to watch their favorite shows, streaming platforms allow users to access a vast library of content at any time and from any location with an internet connection. This on-demand nature of streaming has empowered viewers to consume entertainment according to their own schedules, leading to binge-watching sessions that can last for entire weekends.


The structure of many contemporary television series encourages binge-watching. Serialized storytelling, with intricate plotlines and cliffhanger endings, compels viewers to keep watching to find out what happens next. The availability of entire seasons or series at once enables viewers to immerse themselves fully in the narrative without having to endure prolonged breaks between episodes, enhancing the overall viewing experience.

While binge-watching offers immediate gratification and escapism, it also raises concerns regarding its potential negative effects on individuals' health and well-being. Prolonged periods of sedentary behavior associated with binge-watching can contribute to a sedentary lifestyle, increasing the risk of obesity, cardiovascular disease, and other health issues. Also, excessive screen time, particularly before bedtime, can disrupt sleep patterns and impair cognitive function, leading to fatigue and decreased productivity.

Binge-watching may have social implications, as it can detract from face-to-face interactions and interpersonal relationships. Individuals who spend significant amounts of time binge-watching may neglect other responsibilities, such as schoolwork, work-related tasks, or household chores, leading to conflicts with family members, friends, or colleagues. The escapism offered by binge-watching may serve as a form of avoidance behavior, allowing individuals to temporarily escape from real-life problems or challenges instead of confronting them directly.

Despite these potential drawbacks, binge-watching also has its benefits. For many people, it serves as a form of relaxation and entertainment, providing an opportunity to unwind and decompress after a long day. Binge-watching can also facilitate social bonding, as friends and family members often gather to watch shows together, fostering shared experiences and conversations.

Binge-watching has become a prevalent aspect of modern entertainment culture, driven by the convenience of streaming services and the allure of immersive storytelling. While binge-watching offers immediate enjoyment and social connection, it is essential to recognize its potential negative consequences, such as sedentary behavior, sleep disturbances, and social isolation. By practicing moderation and mindfulness, individuals can enjoy the benefits of binge-watching while minimizing its adverse effects on their health and well-being.

One show that I am currently binge-watching is Manifest on Netflix, my boyfriend and I watch roughly 4 episodes a night but depending on how the show ends we will continue watching until we end an episode that doesn't end in a cliffhanger. I also binge the show Friends at night to fall asleep, I have seen the show in its entirety roughly 4 times, if it's on I will watch it.

1: Personal Video Habits

While I try to limit my screen time each day, I am often in front of a screen more than I would like. I start my morning by making my coffee, sitting down, and watching TV for about an hour before I start getting ready for the day. I don't have class until 11 every day but I try each morning to be out of bed between 9:00 - 9:30, I enjoy my slow mornings and feel like waking up earlier than needed gives me time to get mentally prepared for the day. After I make my coffee I will sit on the couch and turn the TV on, click Hulu, and watch One Tree Hill , I have seen this show all the way through multiple times, but it's an easy show to watch because I don't have to pay attention. I scroll on all my social media while the TV is playing in the background to feel caught up on everything that happened while I was asleep.
